does transfer over wifi wipe the old phone?

im moving into an iphone 17 tomorrow, but i really want to know whether or not the wifi transfer wipes the old iphone. im very cautious about this as whatsapp is having problems with backing up to my icloud and the whatsapp specific transfer requires the old iphone to be available. i cant really find any solid information about this so any help is appreciated. if the old phone is wiped ill just use the normal itunes backup
