FreeCad 1.02 Crashes in Tahoe 26.0

I have been unable to get FreeCad 1.0.2 to open a file since I upgraded to Mac Tahoe 26.0 this week.

FreeCad opens fine but if I try to open a file or project, it crashes. It also crashes if I try to create a new file or project.

It was working fine last week with Sequoia. I am considering rolling back to Sequoia but I have an intel i7 MBP running sequoia so I might use it while I wait for a bug fix. I have sent the crash report to Apple and have a copy.

The issue turned out to be a problem with the FreeCAD user.cfg file … FreeCAD doesn’t seem to use plist file conventions. I deleted the user.cfg. I restarted FC and it regenerated a standard / default user.cfg file (just like a plist).

You should provide this information & your issue including any FreeCad logs to the FreeCad developers as it may help them look into the problem.

Good job figuring out how to get it working. And thanks for providing an update.

I tried to find the config.cfg as well as the path ~/Library/Preferences/FreeCAD, but both is not existing. The App was working fine prior to the upgrade. Do I have to enable hidden folders (like in Windows) or else to find it?

The Library which resides in the user's home folder is hidden from view. Within the Finder click on the Finder's "Go" menu and hold the Option key so that the hidden Library folder appears on the menu. You can also copy & paste the path into the "Go to folder....." field.

You can use the key combination Command + Shift + Dot/Period in the Finder to toggle viewing hidden files/folders off & on. You won't see any difference if the currently viewed folder has no hidden items.

If the FreeCAD folder doesn't exist, or the "config" file, then it may not exist.

My instincts tell me the Free Cad developers have not updated their software to work with the recently released Tahoe. Many smaller developers will take a while after the official launch of a new OS before their software is made to be compatible....assuming the project is still under active development.

FYI, It is always best to either wait a while before upgrading to a new OS, or to do research on all third party apps & even the new OS to make sure they are compatible to the new OS & your workflow/needs, or to test the new OS on another Mac or external drive prior to upgrading the main internal boot drive. There is seldom any need to rush to a new OS...in fact some people will wait a year before upgrading.

Tahoe hasn’t been around long enough for there to be any posts or FAQ’s regarding this issue. The FreeCAD wiki and discussions were the first place I looked.

I had to redo all of my user, display, UI and other personal preferences but it was a lot less painful than rolling back Tahoe to Sequoia.

I will keep my i7 MBP on Sequoia just in case but the M4 Max run’s FC really well so I’m back to work and happy.

I realize FC needs to update but it’s a community project so it might be a while. Still, they have separate forks for “Intel Macs” and “Apple Silicon Macs” so there might be a team dedicated to just Apple Silicon that could accelerate the process.

Having said all of that, the actual crash happens in “thread 0” so that’s suspicious.

For third party app my best advise—if in doubt search the developers website or contact their: Support/Help/FAQ/Known issues/compatibility/updates…
