macOS 26 Tahoe update not showing up on my M1 MacBook Pro

Hello everyone,

It’s been almost a week since the release of macOS 26 Tahoe, but I still don’t see it in Software Update on my MacBook Pro (M1 Pro).

  • The Software Update window just shows “Checking for Updates…” with the spinner.
  • When I try to update via Terminal, I get: “No new software available.”

Here’s what I’ve already tried:

  1. Downloaded the Tahoe installer using:
softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 26.0

  1. The installation process gets stuck at 52 minutes.
  2. Restarted the 'softwareupdated' process → No luck.
  3. Booted into Safe Mode and ran Software Update → No luck.
  4. Reinstalled Sequoia via Recovery, then tried Software Update again → Still no luck.

At this point, it just keeps checking for updates and never proceeds.

Is anyone else facing this issue on an M1 Pro Mac? Any workarounds?

System Details:

  • Chip: Apple M1 Pro
  • RAM: 16 GB

I had issues with the wheel of doom spinning. After a web chat with Apple support it was suggested to close my MacPro down and open in safe mode, click on the Mackintosh HD. Did that and the update was waiting for me. Just under two hours to download and install but no issues. I have a 16" MacBook Pro 2023 and faster fibre but not to the door. Hope this helps as it is so frustrating at times.

Using this Terminal command has worked on my M4 Mac Mini on Day 1 Of release

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 26.0

The machine was running Sequoia 15.6.1 at that time

Be aware, the Full Version of Tahoe is 17 GB in size

Be patient, walk away and do not run Other Applications that require Internet Connections

Used a 6E Wifi connection to an Fibre Optic connected Router with 1 GB Up / Down speeds

softwareupdate --list-full-installers

Finding available software

Software Update found the following full installers:

* Title: macOS Tahoe, Version: 26.0, Size: 16550645KiB, Build: 25A354

Thank you for the reply. I downloaded the installer multiple times and the size and the build number matches with what you have mentioned here. It gets stuck at "52 minutes remaining". I will try once more and report back.

Sorry.

You seem to be confusing Downloading, which you have written " size and the build number matches with what you have mentioned here " which implies it was successfully downloaded

Installation and downloading are Not One and the Same.

The installation process, using the Full Version ( 17 GB )

I speak from personal experience, it will take alot longer to complete

When I started the actual installation process

It took 90 Minutes before the final boot up and log in

I had the issue of Tahoe 26 not showing in Software Update on my MacBook Pro 16-inch (M1, 2021). I did not try to update using Terminal, but I was looking for solutions when I found this post. I have Beta Updates enabled, and when I clicked on the ⓘ next to Beta Updates, I noticed that macOS Tahoe 26 Developer Beta was one of the options. When I selected that option, “macOS Tahoe 26.1 Beta 2” suddenly appeared at the top of the Software Update window. I am about to install it and will post again later.

I tried to post a follow-up to my October 7 post, but Apple notified me that they had blocked it because it contained information about [the word for the second letter of the Greek alphabet] software. I am not sure why my first post was not blocked. Anyway, I am happy to report that once I changed the setting mentioned in my first post, everything went smoothly, and I am enjoying macOS Tahoe. :)
