Kyocera C5150DN won't print after upgrading to Tahoe

After upgrading to Tahoe, when trying to print to my Kyocera C5150DN laser printer the print stops with the message: Stopped, my name, "filter" , 1 page, 1 copy

I have tried deleting the printer and it's associated drivers and re-installing (latest drivers from Kyocera), I have tried using generic drivers (post script prints rubbish and PCL refuses to print in colour).

It's an old printer but up until this upgrade it has worked faultlessly. Any suggestions?

The Kyocera FS-C5150DN printer appears to be a fairly old printer model, but does have one detail that makes it much more useful long-term. While that printer does not appear to support AirPrint (only buy AirPrint printers!), it does appear to support IPP/IPPS, which is related to AirPrint.

Having AirPrint or IPP/IPPS support mean vendor printer drivers are not necessarily needed.

You can usually use the built-in CUPS to print to an IPP/IPPS printer.

Add a printer to your printer list so you can use it on Mac - Apple Support

But I’d likely use the CUPS web interface to add this or another IPP/IPPS printer into the list of printers known to your macOS system:

  • Launch Terminal app
  • Enter the command:
cupsctl WebInterface=yes
  • Open Safari or another web browser
  • Enter this web address (URL) into the browser: http://localhost:631/printers
  • Specify the IP address or local network name of the printer, and whatever else is needed.

Here is the Kyocera FS-C5150DN printer manual with setup details:

Some advanced printing functions may not be available via AirPrint or IPP/IPPS.

AirPrint also adds support for printing from iPad and iPhone, as well as from macOS.

Side note: Multi-function printers with built-in scanners should similarly be purchased only with support for AirPrint or TWAIN, as that means the built-in Image Capture app usually works for scanning, and without needing vendor scanner drivers.

This isn't helpful, but an Apple change in Tahoe caused this; they removed something that even the updated Kyocera drivers rely on. (There are several reports of this elsewhere.) Please submit feedback to Apple.

(And, again not helpful, but getting an AirPrint printer will remove vendor driver issues - even though this one isn't Kyocera's fault.)

Kyocera is the source of the drivers yes, and you will want to ask them about updates, or if this printer is deprecated.

Apple has been locking down macOS, and some of those changes alter details that older drivers can depend upon. Apple adds bugs on occasion, too. And printer drivers can have bugs and misfeatures and other issues. The point of contact for troubleshooting this is the third-party vendor, either for finding and fixing their bug or updating to newer interfaces, or to provide feedback to Apple on some Apple bug they might identify.

For use with Apple gear, I would only buy with AirPrint, and likely also with IPP/IPPS.
