iPhone 17 Pro Max Carplay Keeps Disconnecting

I just upgraded from the 15 Pro Max to the 17 Pro Max. My 15 rarely had any issues with CarPlay but my 17 I can barely keep CarPlay going for 2min before it disconnects and then refuses to reconnect. I’ve done all troubleshooting steps and nothing works.

Wireless Carplay

Troubleshooting done:

Reboot phone

Removed Car Connection

Factory Reset Infotainment System

Re-paired

Checked for updates

Disabled auto join of other WiFi networks.

It will connect but then shortly after disconnect and refuse to reconnect again.

This needs fixed as I use CarPlay everyday for my job.

Hi Everyone,

I finally got so fed up with the problem being even worse after the latest IOS update, that I started a ticket with chat support. They ran me thru trouble shooting, then told me that they needed a senior tech to look at it. They offered me a phone call. I scheduled the phone call, and the two techs who attempted to call me kept disconnecting and couldn't hear me. After this, I chatted back to support and requested they set me up an in-person appointment in store, and they did.

I went to the Apple Store, they were so kind and understanding, and one of the guys who worked there told me he ad his wife BOTH experienced this and it was a software issue. They recommended a backup, and to do a "reset" through their computer which includes completely removing the OS from the phone and then reinstalling it from their master OS in their computer there. The way I understood what they were doing, is that it were as if I were building a new PC, and installing windows for the first time ever on a blank hard drive.

They told me that the software that I had even though its the same "numbers" probably has some bugs in it, and it is best to just start fresh from scratch.

When they did that, I was skeptical, but it fixed every single problem. And I notice that voice to text works better than it had before, and that everything is generally quick.

So a complete reinstall of the OS at the Apple Store is what I recommend. It's worth the 3 hours I spent at the store, because I spent way more time than that troubleshooting random ****. And a software re-install and repair is indeed different than just factory resetting the phone.

Just to properly qualify the context for your lack of problems with the new update. My CarPlay connection was also working well after the update, but then I received a phone call during Maps navigation and shortly after the call finished (maybe 10 minutes) it disconnected. Thereafter it got progressively worse and now it doesn't connect at all anymore. So, has your connection been stable even while making and receiving phone calls throughout this period of sucess?

No problems with me, standarad voice calls, microsoft teams meetings, waze maps (no problems with apple and google maps too) and Car Scanner at once(super widget for carplay). On top of that phone is connected to smart watch(not apple) and RB meta glasses.

Long trips (cc 2h) without problems.

I had constant disconnections before (there is no rule after how long) after which the phone could not connect again without turning airplane mode on and off. I should mention that I did not have problems when I connected the phone with a cable, the problems are only for wireless connection.

My problem with wireless CarPlay in my 2023 BMW X3 unfortunately persists even with iOS 26.3. Neither my iPhone 11 nor my iPhone 17 (not a Pro/Max) automatically reconnects to the car. Manual pairing is required on almost every drive. However, Android Auto works flawlessly with my Samsung Galaxy A6 running Android 10. I've contacted both Apple and BMW for assistance... without any tangible results.

Same here, after reading that my wife and I both upgraded to 26.3 and still had issues yesterday in our 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. No noticeable improvement. I think it’s interesting that despite how many replies are in this thread, there has been NO acknowledgment from Apple that there is a problem.

Our details again:

  • no issues before upgrade to 17 Pros
  • 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee with WIRED carplay
  • Apple OEM cables bought at the Apple Store (no fakes)
  • Same behavior from both phones
  • 26.3 upgrade made no noticeable difference

I just got iPhone 17 and every time I plug it into the CarPlay it disconnects it. It’s still charges the phone, but it keeps disconnecting my map and it drops my phone calls. I have to unplug my phone and then talk with my hands which is an issue because this phone is supposed to be hands-free. And I didn’t have this issue when I had my iPhone 13 the CarPlay worked fine

Just wanted to balance the scales. I too upgraded to 26.4 and carplay did startup right away after the update (which astonished me) but after 5 minutes of driving it disconnected ... as usual. It's done this several times now so the fix is definitely not universal. I drive a 2018 Nissan Leaf that never had a carplay issue until I got my iPhone 17. I've gotten sick of unplugging it all the time to try to restart carplay, but I have noticed that if I just leave it plugged in that after 5-15 minutes carplay will just magically start up again, however it never lasts very long before disconnecting once more. I will say that the last couple of updates appear to have been improving the situation, but it's not fully nailed down yet.

Unfortunately my experience with 26.4 has been negative. With 26.3 using the beats usb-a to usb-c cable with my 17 pro max , CarPlay was working fine. With any 26.4 beta , the RC and now the official release, it takes me several cable connect/disconnect to make CarPlay connect and work. Once it works, it works. But this takes me about 5 mins when I’m driving and it is overtly annoying. I will first try Belkin cable , then will go to a wireless adapter.
