Why does the iPhone online buying process require selecting a carrier?

Why has the iphone online buying process changed requiring selection of a carrier instead of offering a no carrier option? What if I select a carrier and never set up an account with that carrier? This makes no sense. If Apple is selling me an unlocked phone what is the purpose of this?

Impossible to answer "Why" questions. Apple does not publish their reasoning for the choices they make and we are not allowed to speculate on them in these forums.

If you select a financed option, then you must select a carrier and provide a current phone number with service with the selected carrier.

If you choose the "Buy" option instead of "Finance" or "Apple Upgrade Program", then you can select the "Connect to any carrier later" option where no carrier and no number needs to be provided.

For reasons unknown financing requires a carrier be selected and an active phone line with said carrier.

The "why?" questions are ones that only Apple can answer.

You can ask Apple Support, or can provide feedback: Product Feedback - Apple

It may or may not make sense, but it is how Apple is currently selling their unlocked devices.

Apple does the setup for the particular carrier.

So long as there is no carrier subsidy involved in the purchase, the iPhone is unlocked and can be used with any carrier.

As this also arises in some similar contexts, the Apple iPhone warranty is not international.
