Severe lag and freezing after macOS Tahoe update on MacBook Pro M1

The experience has been terrible for the last week. After a few hours of use, restarting becomes imperative. The mouse pointer and windows lagging behind every click and drag, sometimes appearing and disappearing randomly all over the desktop.

Please Apple, update Tahoe ASAP!

I'm running it on MacBook Pro M1 Pro 1TB (half empty) 32Gb Ram

Time Machine backing up was the problem. It’s related to indexing, and the new Spotlight.

My computer was useless for days until I was able to erase my Time Machine backup drive and remove it from settings.

My computer is running fine now. Hallelujah!

I suspect Tahoe was re-indexed every Time Machine backup and trying to backup normally at the same time, without a state to backup from.

Indexing will slow things down a bit until it finishes. Not too much, though. In Time Machine settings, remove any external drives.

I confirm the very same problem OP describes.

Running on a 14" MBP M1 Pro with 32GB RAM that was specifically bought for long-term stability and performance, I hate to see this machine stutter like a light Chromebook on usual daily tasks like browsing, document editing, and file exploring.

Apple, please address this ASAP!

if possible can someone share the steps to reinstall the wonderful Sequoia and what’s necessary after the install is complete? I did not realize how wonderful Sequoia was, until Tahoe. I’ve been vigilant to always upgrade. And allow time to adapt to the new system. But this just has been to difficult with the slowness, etc.

any help appreciated.

My MacBook Pro 16" 2019 had Sequoia which ran without these hitches and glitches caused by Tahoe. The system is freezing and does not even return to normal unless forced shut down is used. I would like to roll back to Sequoia. Not all computer repair shops are capable in rolling back. The nearest Genius Bar is in Greenville, SC. (not an option). Apple what is the fix? They say you can't roll back, but you can if you can find a dealer with the knowledge. I left one in Virginia. They updated my system and cleaned up some files and apps. It work well for 30 days and now the lagging and glitching has started again. I want Sequoia.

Same here.

Few months-old Macbook Pro, just upgraded to Tahoe, was working great before doing that.

M4 Pro, 48 GB Memory, 2TB of memory (1.4TB still unused)

Constant lag and freezing with typing, mouse movements, opening windows.

Tried a few fixes suggested (shutting off things); nothing has helped.

I'm thinking this must be affecting a lot of people, so I hope Apple is working on solutions.

Until that happens, trying to think positive about this, so I suggest we not call the Wheel of Death, um, the Wheel of Death anymore.

Thinking "Mindfulness Wheel"?

The Mindfulness Wheel appears and spins in a very pleasing manner, reminding you to pause for a couple seconds, breathe, return to the present moment, and just wait a couple more seconds for the letter to actually appear on the screen.

In that magical pause between typing and the letter appearing, the spinning wheel centers you back in the present, focusing on the now, and the now after the previous now, and also a third now, after the previous now.

And then, just when you least expect it, the Mindfulness Wheel disappears and your letter appears on the screen.

It's also kind of like a powerful shot of nostalgia -- free dopamine hit, yay -- because it brings you a flood of sensations associated with using a Windows PC circa 30 years ago.

The Mindfulness Wheel: Between every keystroke or mouse click, a random and genuinely inexplicable chance to be present and reconnect with the serene calm of nothing happening.
