Why do I need an iCloud email address to allow me to sync mail over iCloud when I want to only sync my gmail accounts and not use an iCloud email?

I’ve figured out a bunch of things since posting this. I asked this thinking that by turning on iCloud mail, it would synchronize everything on my Mac’s mail app (INCLUDING the internet accounts I’ve added which are gmail) directly to the iPhone mail app. But it doesnt work that way; you have to manually add the other mail services.
If you're only using Gmail, you don't need to use iCloud (though there are lots of other reasons to use iCloud).
What devices are you using?
Yes, you have to add the mail services you use to each device. That is expected behavior. The only exception (sort of) is iCloud. When you log in to iCloud on a device, you're also logged into your iCloud email.
