My IPad keyboard space bar rarely works the first time and will close what I am doing

I am so displeased with my new IPad Pro keyboard. The space bar rarely works after I type the first word and I have had issues where it will close out what I am working on when I keep tapping it to get a space entered. It completely messes with my typing flow. I tried adjusting the pressure I use, where on the bar I tap, and how quickly I tap to no avail. Suggestions appreciated, because I am having huge buyers regret and miss my laptops basic reliability.
