iOS 26 AoD (always on display) turns off now?

iOS 26.0, iPhone 17 Pro: always on display does not stay on. It goes black. It even says in settings that it will turn off to save battery. There is no setting to have it stay on, dimly, like my iPhone 16 Pro does on iOS 18.7

There are some circumstances in which the Always On Display will fully turn off:

  • Your iPhone is connected to CarPlay
  • Your iPhone is face down in your pocket or bag
  • Your iPhone is connected to your Apple Watch and you walk away.
  • Low Power Mode is enabled
  • You're using a Continuity Camera
  • Your iPhone is idle for a while (Your iPhone learns these patterns on its own)

So, I had the same issue, I went to my watches settings, turned off the always on, then turned it back on. I then went to my phones app for watch and did the same thing again within the app, off then on. I then shut off my watch and waited 30 seconds to turn it back on. It is now working. I had just updated it and it was presenting these issues but a simple cycle from the watches settings and the phone watch app settings with a full power cycle of the watch afterwards hopefully helps! Good luck.
