Macbook Pro hangs after login

Macbook was working fine until today. Opened lid and logged in OK with password but then hangs at approx 50% progress. (Have left it for 3 hours). Forced shutdown and restart but progress always stops at approx 50%. Have tried reset of NVRAM and SMC. Do not appear to be able to start in Safe mode (no indication on menu bar). Recovery mode disk checks are all OK. Hardware diagnostics are also all OK. It is the same with all 3 user accounts (admin).

Have tried OS restore (which appears to select Ventura), but this hangs after approx 40 mins (after login). Any suggestions please?

You do not say what exact Mac is this...

there are 63 models of MBP going back to 2006, as you might imagine they are not all the same.

On the surface of things it sounds like the drive is failing(?)

In or out of warranty you can get a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test /assessment

Make an appointment for a "hardware issue"
