iPad mini iOS26 frustrations - HELP!

I close apps. I used to swipe up and boom, done. Now it’s 3 steps that require my glasses to find the tiny pull down menu and then make sure my fingerprint taps only the tiny red button.

I turn on my iPad many times a night to turn on a tv show and a stop playing timer to help me get back to sleep. Now, I have to be very awake to find the type tiny passcode line (because the touch button is much hard to reach in this scenario). So to better see it, raise the brightness, right? Nope. That slide on the quick access menu has become temperamental. I cannot figure out what makes it happy to work. Sometimes, it won’t work, other times, I hold a second then it reacts. Next time, it’s some other series of events. It’s inconsistent.

As a result of all the issues here, the frustration and activity wakes me up, asking it harder to get back to sleep.

oh and there is still the long standing problem of the timers “stop playing” magically switching to “radial” and waking me up when the timer is finished, when my purpose was to get back to sleep.

feels like these updates were made for Pro users and/or Pencil users. If so, let me undo this

Hey there Mcee7

Thankyou for sharing your issue in a detailed explanation.

I understand this situation is very frustrating and is not what you want every night. The easiest way to resolve this issue is to follow the step by step guide below which pay provide a mor settled approach and fix to your issue.

Use AssistiveTouch:

  • Go to Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Assistive Touch → turn on.
  • Tap the Assistive Touch menu button, go to Device → More → Multitasking → Close All.

You now have a one-touch way to close apps without precision swipes.

Or, don’t close apps manually — iPadOS manages background apps efficiently, so closing them is rarely necessary.

Brightness Slider in Control Centre is Temperamental

Yes, the new brightness slider is extra sensitive — swipe up/down too fast, it may ignore your touch.

  • Use Settings → Display & Brightness to adjust brightness numerically.
  • Control Center gestures: try a single firm swipe instead of tap-and-hold. Sometimes the “extra press” gesture is misinterpreted as a long press.

You can also set Night Shift / True Tone to automatically reduce brightness and blue light at night, so you don’t have to adjust manually.

Passcode Entry is Harder

The numeric keypad got smaller in some views, especially on landscape or iPad mini orientations.

  • Use Face ID / Touch ID wherever possible to avoid typing the passcode.
  • Raise text size temporarily:
  • Settings → Display & Brightness → Text Size / Bold Text.

Makes buttons and sliders easier to see in low light.

Timers “Stop Playing” Switching to Radial

Apple changed the behaviour of the Stop Playing timer: it can now switch to the “radial” style in Music or TV, which visually wakes you.

  • Use the Clock app → Timer → Stop Playing → start and don’t interact with Control Center while asleep.
  • You can also try third-party sleep timers for Music / TV apps that don’t mess with the iPad’s UI.

Summary

Apple’s latest updates clearly prioritize Pro workflows and multitasking, which makes the iPad less friendly for sleepy, low-effort nighttime use. You cannot officially revert to an older iPadOS, but you can:

  • Use Assistive Touch for one-tap multitasking / app closing.
  • Avoid manual app closing altogether.
  • Use Face ID / Touch ID to bypass passcodes.
  • Set Night Shift / True Tone and consider increasing text size / bold text to make touch targets easier.
  • Use dedicated sleep-timer apps if Stop Playing behaves annoyingly.

Feel free to reply if you need any further additional support with your query.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. I’ll give the Assistive Touch a try. However, the other problems/situational uses- these suggested fixes focused on the wrong problem. When I wake up in the middle of my full sleep routine, doing many of these steps involves turning on the room light, sitting up and putting on my glasses - all steps that ensure getting back to sleep will take significantly longer than with the previous iPadOS, which I could while laying down, with one outstretched arm. The brightness - a return to gentle finger tip swipe would be good UX. The passcode number pad size isn’t the issue, the tiny, hard to isolate line of text that gets users to the number pad is the problem; it’s bad UX. The timer auto-switching to radial when the user has picked AND SAVED stop playing, should work has the app implies; it’s a years-long problem that Apple should have addressed a zillion updates ago. Suggesting I add another app to do what Apple should be able to do is a digital shoulder shrug.
