How to open mp4 on Mac?

MP4 is supposed to be the most widely supported video format, so why do some files just refuse to open on macOS? Sometimes they play fine, other times there’s no audio, or they just won’t open at all. Are there different types of MP4 files that macOS struggles with?

If there’s a simple way to fix this—maybe a setting I don’t know about or a better way to open them—I’d love to hear it. What’s the best way to handle MP4 playback on a Mac, especially on newer versions like macOS Tahoe?

Thanks everyone for recommendations. Came back with some feedback. I was initially using VLC, and yeah, it worked fine, everything was good. But then Elmedia Player was mentioned in the comments, so I decided to give it a try. After playing around with it a bit, I noticed that Elmedia has a few nice features that VLC doesn’t, like better subtitle handling and some extra video settings. Overall, it just feels a bit fresher and more comfortable on Mac. Now I’m using it instead of VLC, and so far, I’m happy with it. Of course, everyone has their own preferences, but for me, Elmedia seems like a better fit.
