iPhone 17 Pro auto back-up to Mac under macOS 26

Since years and days I use to most secure back-up procedure: backing up my devices to my Mac. (a.k.a. iTunes back-up) These backups are encrypted so in case of a restore, all data (inc. health data) will be set back.

The 'Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected’ option is always enabled and when I connect my devices, the Mac automatically starts first with a back-up and than syncs my devices with my Mac. I also have to enter a password as the back-up is encrypted.

Since 2 weeks I own a iPhone 17 Pro and it seems macOS Tahoe does things different with the iPhone17 Pro as with my other devices.

As usual ‘Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected’ is enabled and when I connect my iPhone 17Pro there is only a sync but NO back-up. I also do not have to enter a password.

Separately I can choose to make a back-up and then the Mac asks for my password.

My other devices still behave as before so auto back-up and sync.

I deleted the iPhone 17 Pro back up, deleted Finder prefs but this is not the solution. I also contacted Apple Support but they have no clue other than waiting for a fix.

Any suggestions how to let the iPhone 17 Pro make auto back-ups too?

Thanks for your help.

In the Finder...not sure I get it.

You are saying you have no Backups if you run the backup now?

With a major upgrade If it is working differently it is no surprise there...(?)

verify you are running the current stable release of Tahoe including bug fixes, security updates is macOS 26.0.1

Thanks.

Long story short: with exactly same settings for all my devices (see my screenshot) after connecting the iPhone 17 Pro with my Mac only starts a Sync and is executed. All my other devices first do a encrypted backup (and ask for a password and then sync.

So with same settings:
iPhone 17 Pro: Sync only
Device 2: Back up and Sync
Device 3: Back up and Sync

Of course on the iPhone 17 Pro I can do a separate back up by pushing the 'Back Up Now' button but as said previously, with my other devices this goes automatically...

I backup my iPhone about once every 6 months if I remember even. My iPhone is never routinely plugged in to my mac (moving photos would be the biggest reason to connect.)

I would always archive at least one backup—so as to not replace the only existing copy—thus leaving one copy if there was some corruption or failure.

you can try third party option for managing iphone backups if this is a issue for you—
