iPhone Air incompatibility with Indian eSIM providers

I want to buy an iphone Air in US and use that in India. When visited local Apple store, they mentioned that this is the only model in 17 iphone series which is not compatible for universal use. I was told that there are different model numbers for iphone Air based on region e.g. one model for Asia, another for North America etc. Therefore, you can't use an iphone Air purchased in US with a local India e-SIM provider like VI or Reliance.

Is this true?

All iPhones are region specific.

Not just the iPhone 17.

There is no such thing as a universal or international iPhone.

The first issue would be warranty coverage. If you need to have it repaired, Indian service providers may not honor the warranty. You would then be required to return to the US to have your phone repaired.

Second issue is cellular radio frequencies used. Since the iPhone is meant for a specific region, phones bought in the US might not support the frequencies used by Indian cellular networks.

Always buy iPhones from the country you intend to use them.

I beg to differ. I have been using for 10+ years all earlier models of iPhones purchased in US with the SIM from Indian carrier. It works even in US when I am back home. Even all models of 17 series except Air model is compatible as long as you buy the unlocked phone. Not sure why only Air model has this limitation which is odd.

Thanks for your comments though.
