SMS messages (green text) can not be answered from MacBook Pro

I receive all messages on my MacBook Pro as well as phone and iPad. BUT I can only reply to messages from iPhones (blue text). Why am I not able to respond to SMS messages (green text) on all devices? All devices are logged into the same iCloud account. Thanks for any help you can provide.
