Is there a way to turn off notifications for reactions to text messages? I am beyond annoyed with getting 20 notifications of people reacting to a text I sent.

No. But you can swipe left on the message notification in your Notification Center, then select Mute for 1 Hour or Mute for Today. Hopefully the chat will die down by then.
