X11 applications run with XQuartz not working properly in macOS Tahoe

Hello

XQuartz is an open-source effort to develop a version of the X.Org X Window System (https://www.xquartz.org/), widely used to bring graphical support to applications running in remote servers (usually via SSH).

Since macOS Tahoe, XQuartz fails to refresh properly on window resize (more info here https://github.com/XQuartz/XQuartz/issues/438#issuecomment-3371409500), leading to severe usability issues (see screenshot).

The XQuartz developers are already aware of the issue, but I’m wondering if there’s anything we can do at the OS level to resolve it and restore the usual behavior from before macOS Tahoe.

I assume they are aware of the issue.

There is no "they". There was only one dude and he's now on a different project. There's literally no one. The project was abandoned years ago.

Continuing your discussion would open up a much broader debate about the nature and sustainability of open-source software itself. But yes, you’re absolutely right, if this error isn’t resolved, the upgrade to Tahoe is completely blocked for us.

Forget open-source software. The issue is the sustainability of software itself. What are you going to do if this isn't fixed. Stay on Sequoia? Pay for an alternative? Switch to another operating system?

Are they? Do they even exist? Are they even a plural? XQuartz is an Apple project maintained by one Apple developer. Or at least, that was the case two years ago. Nothing on the project has happened since then. It seem to be abandoned.

The OS is off-limits, of course. XQuartz is open source and somewhat separate. Perhaps it could be fixed. Perhaps not.

It's a really tough call. Your comment in that GitHub issue is regarding a NetCDF viewer. I have some interest in that area. But should I put aside my work on an iOS/macOS GIS imagery viewer to fix XQuartz? I don't know how open source developers pay their bills. I've had to put aside my GIS project for some other apps that could result in more immediate revenue. There's this whole world of people waiting for other people to work for free. What if they just can't afford to do that anymore?

@neuroanatomist

Thanks for the suggestion, I already did. Unfortunately, once feedback is sent, there is no way to track it.

@etresoft

Honestly, I don't know the internals of the tool. There has been some activity in the GitHub post, so I assume they are aware of the issue.
