MacBook clock not updating automatically

The clock for my apple MacBook is not updating correctly. I have to go into settings and turn off having it set automatically to "apple time" and deselect it to be set to the time zone nearest me in settings. then I can reselect them and the clock and date update correctly. But then the next time I use it again, the MacBook clock and date are off again. Is this a software glitch? I've powered my MacBook completely down and let it rest for 5 minutes and turn it on again, still it's not correct. I've looked for updates to install and have none.
