Unlocking inherited 2014 Mac mini with unknown Apple ID password

I was able to unlock the computer, based on his password hint. But I have no idea what his apple ID password could be, and I need to sign him out and sign myself in.

Any idea?

Thank you!

Sorry for your loss.

Please review Apple's guidance here: How to request access to a deceased family member’s Apple Account - Apple Support

I figured it out.

I followed step seven here: What to do before you sell, give away, trade in, or recycle your Mac - Apple Support

Then I did this: Factory reset on my 2014 Mac Mini - Apple Community

Then I repeated step seven, above, because it was still logged into the defunct account.

And then I reinstalled a new copy of the OS, which took a couple tries, and then it worked.

Hope this helps someone else!
