I was able to unlock the computer, based on his password hint. But I have no idea what his apple ID password could be, and I need to sign him out and sign myself in.
Any idea?

I figured it out.
I followed step seven here: What to do before you sell, give away, trade in, or recycle your Mac - Apple Support
Then I did this: Factory reset on my 2014 Mac Mini - Apple Community
Then I repeated step seven, above, because it was still logged into the defunct account.
And then I reinstalled a new copy of the OS, which took a couple tries, and then it worked.

Hi - This doesn't help. He wasn't a family member, we don't have a Legacy Contact access key. He was my dad's good friend. He gave his dad his old mac mini so I could use it with my kids, but I can't get his Apple ID off of it, which means I can't install any different software for them. Any other suggestions? Thank you!
