Wife was using phone, put it down for 10 seconds, picked it back up and touch screen was no longer working and neither was face id lock

Force your iPhone to restart:

Press and quickly release the volume up button.
Press and quickly release the volume down button.
Press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo (this might take longer than 10 seconds).

If that doesn’t help, then I recommend service.
