Apple Maps alternative route selection not working on my iPhone after iOS26 update

I have recently updated my iPhone 14 to IOS26. Now when I use Apple maps in Carplay (via USB) it wont allow me to select an alternative route ( longer journey time, longer distance etc). If I highlight an alternative route and try to select it then Apple maps closes and goes back to the main menu. I had this function working for years on IOS18. I updated to IOS26.01 but still the problem exists.
