OS 26 won't let me move Desktop files to Trash

  1. I recently installed OS 26, and it is "guarding" the desktop. When I went to delete two text files, it wanted my password. When put in my password, I still get an error message: "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."

  1. A related issue is that I cannot drag any new items to the Desktop besides the folder aliases that were already there.

I checked permissions on each file to be deleted, and I do have Read/Write access.

I am not using FileVault or Stack

I tried restarting and I tried Force-Quitting the Finder, but it made no difference.

I was able to remove the files the old way be selecting them, holding down Option + Command and hitting Delete, but then they are gone for good.

What's next?

Mac mini, macOS 26.0

This implies the issue is with the source files and not with the Desktop destination. Or possibly some third party software is causing the problems. Have you tried booting into Safe Mode to see if you still have this problem? Unfortunately according to well respected forum contributor @etresoft, Safe Mode no longer guarantees the elimination of issues regarding third party software so Safe Mode is not a guarantee for confirming third party software issues (very disappointing such a useful troubleshooting step has been hamstrung by Apple).

If you are using any anti-virus apps, cleaning/optimizer apps, or third party security software, then uninstall them by following their developer's instructions. These types of apps are not needed on a Mac and will usually cause more problems than they solve.

Unfortunately there are many possibilities & many unknowns for us.

Is iCloud enabled for the Desktop folder? Or any other cloud file syncing service?

Is File Sharing enabled on this Mac?

Where do the files originate which you are trying to relocate to the Desktop?

You mention installing Tahoe. Was this an upgrade from an existing OS? If so what version of macOS & were you having any odd issues with it before the upgrade? And did this issue occur immediately after the upgrade, or a bit later?

Or is this a clean install of macOS Tahoe? If so, did you migrate/restore from another system or a TM backup (or some other type of backup)?

I'm not sure I can be of any help here, but these are some things that need to be addressed. Chances are you will need to take the Mac to an Apple Store or an AASP since some things just require a first hand experience to note all these little nuances.

So the issue is no more, or it is an ongoing issue for any file or folder...? It is unclear

Have you shut down and restarted more than once since your upgrade(?)

Are you on the current macOS 26.0.1 (?)

verify your software is up to date—

The current stable release of Tahoe including bug fixes, security updates is macOS 26.0.1
