Unable to update and pair Apple Watch Series 9 with iPhone

I was gifted a watch series 9, i wanted to to updated it but it wouldn’t let and it wasn’t connected to my iphone, i reset it and now each time i try to pair it to my phone it says it needs an update but it doesn’t work out
