Settings app shows a notification number with no real alerts on my MacBook Air

there is a notification number on the settings icon, but in fact there is nothing in the settings, no updates or notifications, why is this happening and how to remove it?

If there is a software update, install it and compare your results...(?)



You can try a A SafeBoot Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt


I think I could safely ignore it.

If it is more than you can bear, try deleting the plist from the Finder.

Finder>Go>Go To Folder copy & paste:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.preferences.softwareupdate.plist


reboot and compare your results.


or simply drag the System Setting icon off the Dock so you do not have to look at it.
