There's nothing inherently more dangerous about a RAR file than any other downloaded archive. When downloading an application, regardless of how its packaged, you should exercise reasonable caution. Of course, since there aren't any Mac viruses and only a few rare trojans, you also shouldn't jump at shadows the way you have to in the Windows world! basically, you don't have to worry about viruses. if you exchange files with winsloth users, however, you might want to get ClamXav to avoid passing any malicious files on.

Note that this page has some outdated information and is quite biased towards encouraging use of AV software. It does have some good information, but you need to take some of the stuff with a grain of salt.
