Disable persistent 'Enable Password Autofill' notification on macOS Tahoe

I decided to try the Apple Passwords app and synced my iMac passwords. Now I get a Enable Password Autofill notification every time I click on any search box. I've turned off every autofill setting I can find and turned off the Apple Passwords app but it didn't remedy the problem. I even reinstalled macOS Tahoe 26.0.1 and I still get the notification every time I click on a search box. How can I stop this from happening?

To disable the autofill feature and potentially stop the persistent notification, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Apple menu  in the top-left corner of your screen.
  2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions).
  3. Scroll down and select Passwords.
  4. You will likely need to enter your login password or verify with Touch ID to unlock your saved passwords.
  5. In the Passwords section, look for Password Options (it might be a button or a link).
  6. Toggle off the setting for AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys.

If you are seeing the prompt specifically within a browser other than Safari (like Chrome, Firefox, or Edge) and you use the iCloud Passwords extension, you might also need to:

  • Remove or disable the iCloud Passwords browser extension if you use a different primary password manager or do not want the Apple feature in that browser.

If the notification persists, other potential steps

  • Restarting your Mac after making the change.
  • Checking Touch ID settings (if applicable) in System Settings > Touch ID & Password and ensuring "Use Touch ID for autofilling passwords" is also turned off.
  • Logging out of and then back into your Apple ID in System Settings (click your name/profile at the top of the sidebar).
