Force Restart the iPhone (Quick Attempt)
The first thing to try is a force restart, which may clear the temporary glitch. This will not erase your data.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side button (also known as the Power button) until the screen turns off and the Apple logo appears.
- Release the Side button.
If the phone successfully restarts and lets you proceed with the setup, you'll likely want to choose to Reset the device (Erase All Content and Settings) and start the setup and transfer process again.

Put the iPhone into Recovery Mode (Most Likely Fix)
If the force restart doesn't work, you'll need to use a Mac or a Windows PC with the Apple Devices app or iTunes installed to restore the iPhone. This process will force the iPhone to install a fresh copy of the latest iOS software.
Preparation:
- Ensure your computer is running the latest operating system.
- Connect the iPhone 16 Pro Max to your computer using a USB-C cable.
Steps to Enter Recovery Mode:
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side button. Do not release it when the Apple logo appears. Keep holding it until you see the Recovery Mode screen (an image of a computer and a cable).
- Release the Side button.
Steps on Your Computer:
- Locate your iPhone in the Finder (on a Mac) or Apple Devices app/iTunes (on a PC).
- A window should pop up offering the options to Update or Restore the iPhone.
- Choose Update first. This will attempt to reinstall the software without erasing your data. Wait for the process to complete.
- If the Update fails or the issue persists, repeat steps 1-3, but this time select Restore.
- ⚠️ Warning: Selecting Restore will erase all data on your iPhone 16 Pro Max and install the latest iOS. Since your phone is new, this should be acceptable, and you can then restore your data from a recent backup of your 15 Pro Max.
