IOS 26 camera thinking too hard - Not working

Recently, my iPhone 15's rear cameras started struggling. It seems like my iPhone is thinking really hard about how to make the camera app work and I can only 'trick' it into working maybe 10% of the time. This is in all applications.

I have done all the trouble shooting: close out camera app and reopen, try swapping from front to back camera, zoom in and out, restart phone, even resetting the phone several times.

What's most frustrating is that I am able to, as I said before, 'trick' it into working sometimes. I can reset my phone and QUICKLY open the camera app after a reboot and it might work for a minute or two, but then goes back to acting like its thinking too hard. This is frustrating because it leads me to believe its not the hardware, although this is a brand new phone from the AppleCare Express Replacement program (and I don't want to pay another $100 if it is a dud phone.) After a reset I would think its not any glitch or software that I installed.

I manage the social media accounts for a couple of companies, so not having my cameras just doesn't work for me.

Quick Fixes

  • Force Quit and Reopen Camera App: Close the Camera app entirely from the App Switcher and relaunch it.
  • Restart Your iPhone: A simple reboot can often clear minor software glitches.
  • Toggle Between Cameras: Open the Camera app and switch between the front-facing and rear-facing cameras a couple of times.
  • Check/Clean the Lens: Ensure the camera lenses are clean and free of smudges. Also, temporarily remove your phone case or any camera lens protectors, as some accessories can interfere with the camera's focus or LiDAR sensor.
  • Check Third-Party Apps: See if the camera works in other applications, like a third-party camera app or FaceTime. If it does, the issue is likely confined to the native Camera app.

Settings Adjustments

  • Camera Adjustments Setting: A common fix reported for button issues or certain functionalities being 'stuck' is to check the Camera Adjustments setting.
    1. Go to Settings.
    2. Search for or scroll to Camera.
    3. Tap on Camera Control.
    4. Check the toggle next to Camera Adjustments under "Controls." Try toggling this setting off and then on again. This may resolve an accidental change in the update.
  • Disable Macro Control (for focus issues): If your camera is struggling to focus on close objects, it might be overly aggressive with the automatic macro mode.
    1. Go to Settings > Camera.
    2. Toggle Macro Control on.
    3. Open the Camera app and look for the flower icon 🌸 (the macro indicator). Tap it to disable the automatic macro mode.
  • Reset All Settings: This resets all personalized settings (like network and keyboard settings) but does not erase your data, photos, or apps.
    1. Go to Settings > General.
    2. Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
    3. Select Reset All Settings.
