iOS Google Maps driving icon changing to "car" icon instead of default arrow

while driving this morning I discovered a bug within Google Maps on my iPhone 16 running 26.0.1.

the default blue arrow had changed to a red car icon. no matter how many times I change the driving avatar back to the default blue arrow, it changes to the last used "car" icon whenever initiating driving instructions.

to troubleshoot I have done the following:

restarted device & apps
ruled out CarPlay as a cause. issue remains when disconnect from Carplay.
deleted and re-installed Google Maps

Contact Google for help with their software, this is not an Apple product.
