Struggling with a .dmg file
Hello everyone,
Here's the deal. I have a friend who owns a Dell Mini 10v, with Dell's Ubuntu Remix on it as the OS. Now I had to do some work on it, so what I did was I hooked up the hard drive from the Mini 10 to my Macbook Pro, using a usb adapter.
From there, I made a disk image of the WHOLE DRIVE (very important), by selecting the drive and doing a new image. I even made two backups, one using the compressed and one using the read-only options. The read only one was exactly the size of the drive I imaged (8GB SSD). Now I want to either restore that image to the drive or be able to mount it to recover files.
BUT, If I try to restore with Disk Utility, I can't restore the whole drive, only one partition. And if I try to restore to a partition , it complains about reading the source. If I try to mount it, it says there are no mountable file systems (Due to the Linux ext2 file systems.) It can see there are 3 file systems inside, just not mountable.
Even doing a dd command from the terminal from the 8GB .dmg (which I assume to be a bit for bit copy of the original disk) doesn't work, the drive doesn't boot, and hangs displaying "MBR XNA" or something like that.
So basically my question is how can I get at the files on one of these images? It seems like I'm stonewalled no matter which way I go...
