I have a standard iphone 16 with ios 26 installed, and whenever i try opening games they run pretty smoothly, until i switch apps, reply to a notification by swiping down, opening control centre, and sometimes even changing the volume with the side buttons. After that, the game lags a ton and doesn’t stop stuttering until I close and reopen the app. for context, i got the update weeks ago and it only really happens on games.

Have you tried a forced restart:
The operative word here is QUICKLY for the first two buttons, then a long hold for the SIDE button; and try it a couple of times, the timing is a little tricky. If done correctly this will always work unless the phone has a hardware problem.

Go to Settings/Battery/Power Mode and turn off Adaptive Power and Low Power Mode. If they are already off turn them on, then off again.
ive tried that, but the game goes right back to lagging the second i turn my brightness up or open the control centre at all
