Publish Error - An unknown error occurred

Have been using 08 with no problems and since upgrading to 09 have not had any problems until lately.
Now whenever I try to publish my site to a local folder (which is my normal workflow) I get a - "Publish error. An unknown error occurred" - message.
As far as I can tell the only file missing from the local folder is the index.html file.
If I go ahead and upload the revisions anyway leaving the existing index.html file on the server, it seems to be ok, but am worried I am missing something and/or problems will arise later.
Any ideas on this much appreciated.
Have the same problem whether tring to publish from my iMac or from a MBP.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Give this a try:

5 - move the domain file from your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
6 - launch iWeb, create a new test site and save.
7 - go to the your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
8 - move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
9 - launch iWeb and try again.

I also tried making a new site as a dummy site

Was that using a new domain file or in the existing domain file?

I tried these solutions to no avail, and eventually found the problem was in my blog archives. A few of the entries showed up totally blank except for the background. I chose to delete them, and publishing worked fine.

Note that I use iWeb on my laptop and desktop, and will frequently copy the domain file to a flash drive and move it from one computer to the other. I'm guessing this is not the safest practice, now!

I'm having a similar problem with iWeb's blog. I moved some of the pages around in my navigation pane, and even renamed them, as I was figuring out how to have MobileMe host a domain name I purchased. Under the direction of Apple support tech staff, I set up that domain under a new MobileMe user by upgrading to a "family pack". I had to copy my domain into the iWeb support folder for that new "user" I created ("White Pines"). Then I got rid of the extraneous files in user "White Pines" and only kept the ones I need for that dedicated site.

I then I then returned to my original user, renamed my iWeb files their original names, dragged them back to their original places (or as close as I could remember, and now iWeb won't publish ("an unknown error has occurred"). As far as I know, the domain file in my original user iWeb folder is unchanged. I have tried each fix suggested in this discussion thread to no avail.

I'm not familiar with the peculiarities of iWeb blogs but remember something about changing page names, etc. can lose the entires since they are kept on the MMe server associated with the MMe account. Someone else who has lots of experience with blogs may be able to give you some recovery tips.

I do know that serious bloggers recommend using one of the established blogging sites and then just link to it or embed it into one of the iWeb pages: Embed a Site Within an iWeb Page.

If you find you can't recover your blog entries you might consider switching over to one of the industrial strength blogging sites.

HI
As a regular user of iweb, i've had no problems with the iweb 09... till today, 27th Sept too.

It refused to let me update pages, said i could not sign in to mobile me...
so i had to sign out then back in ..... and re sync.
A real pain i can tell you...and it still wont let me sign in!!!!

A mobile me fault i think.!!!
Will try again tomorrow.

I see no reason why using a Flash drive would be dangerous. If you leave the domain file on that drive and open it with iWeb then i would reformat the drive to Mac OS X Extended (journaled). If you use it just to copy to and from each computer the default format should be acceptable.

As I've said I don't use a blog so have no experience in them and their frailties. But do know they have frailties.
