panic(cpu 1 caller 0xfffffff01c2ca86c): x86 CPU CATERR detected

Good morning :-)

Apparently I am not the only one facing this problem.

I have no clue what to do.

Does anyone have an idea?

Thank you so much.

Cheers, Hardy

There is very little information supplied outside of posting only a portion of the whole Crash Repor

So I have put your question to an AI / LMM  to see what “ it  “ has to say on this matter

What It Means

"CATERR" = Catastrophic Error

  • This is a hardware-level CPU error reported by Intel processors (on Apple Silicon, this wouldn’t appear; so you’re definitely on an Intel Mac).
  • It usually means the CPU itself detected an unrecoverable internal fault — often triggered by:
  • Failing CPU or logic board
  • Bad RAM (less common, but possible)
  • Power supply instability
  • Overheating or poor contact with heatsink
  • Corrupted firmware (rare)

Common Causes

  1. Thermal or electrical instability
  • If the machine overheats, CATERRs can appear.
  • check for dust, poor fan operation, or dried thermal paste.

Defective hardware

  • RAM, CPU, or logic board fault.
  • Run Apple Diagnostics (hold D at boot).

  1. Firmware or OS corruption
  • If it started after an update, try reinstalling macOS 26 Tahoe (that’s likely a future or beta macOS version; perhaps equivalent to macOS 15 Sequoia in our time).

Peripheral or driver issues

  • Disconnect all external devices and see if the panic persists.

 What You Can Do

Run Apple Diagnostics

  • Shut down.
  • Hold D while powering on.
  • Let it check for hardware errors (note any reference codes).

Reset NVRAM and SMC

  • NVRAM: Hold Option + Command + P + R on startup until you hear the second chime (Intel Macs only).
  • SMC: Shut down → Unplug for 15 seconds → Plug back → Wait 5 seconds → Boot.

Reinstall macOS

  • Boot into recovery (Command + R) and reinstall the system.

If all else fails

  • You likely have a hardware failure (main logic board or CPU). Apple or an authorized repair shop will need to run full diagnostics.
