Can I remap the Dictation key to mute the microphone on Mac?

I want to remap the Dictation key on my Mac so that it toggles the microphone mute or unmute function instead of starting Dictation.

I am looking for a way to do this natively within macOS, without using any third-party apps, extensions, or tools.

I have checked System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Function Key, but I do not see an option to assign a custom action to the Dictation key.

Is there any built-in way to reassign the Dictation key to a different function or to create a custom shortcut that mutes or unmutes the microphone when the Dictation key is pressed?

If this is not currently possible, I would like to know if there are any hidden settings or Accessibility options that could make this work.

There is no built-in Apple UI that lets you assign the dedicated Dictation key (the “microphone” / “globe” / function key depending on keyboard) to a completely different action (e.g., global mic mute/unmute) instead of launching dictation.

Even if you disable or change the dictation shortcut, that dedicated key (on Apple keyboards, the mic/globe key) remains bound under the hood to the dictation function and cannot (via UI) be repurposed to a completely different system-level action.

The built-in remapping tools (modifier remapping in Keyboard settings) are very limited: they don’t cover non-modifier keys (e.g., the Dictation key) in the UI.

Some advanced remapping (via hidutil) is documented — but this is a terminal-based approach and still not fully supported for all keys
