CarPlay no longer works without Siri after iOS 26 update

After updating to iOS 26, CarPlay no longer works unless Siri is turned on.

CarPlay previously worked perfectly for me with all Siri options disabled.

I prefer not to use Siri at all, so this is a significant change in functionality.

Can anyone confirm whether this is an intentional requirement or a bug? Is there a way to continue using carpley and not use siri?

I’d like to continue using CarPlay the way it worked before.

That’s actually not correct.

CarPlay did work with Siri fully disabled. I’m saying this from direct experience — after the Siri incident a few years ago, I turned Siri completely off on all my devices and continued using CarPlay without any issues.

I only re-enabled Siri temporarily while testing iOS 26, and after disabling it again, CarPlay stopped working. So something clearly changed.

There are also multiple discussions online confirming that Apple has recently started enforcing Siri as a requirement for CarPlay, and people recommend enabling only the “Press Side Button for Siri” toggle as a workaround. Supposedly that lets CarPlay function without Siri actually listening, but I was hoping there was a better way that doesn’t require enabling the Siri framework at all.

Siri is not required for CarPlay itself.

I’ve demonstrated this through actual testing on my devices, so please stop presenting it as an absolute fact.

I’ll also be adding screenshots to show that wired CarPlay works on the iPhone 13 Pro with Siri completely disabled — both on iOS 18.x and after updating to iOS 26.x.

For some reason, wireless CarPlay does not work without Siri, but wired CarPlay continues to function normally.

On my iPhone 13 Pro, all CarPlay features work with Siri off.

On my iPhone 15 Pro Max, however, CarPlay does not work at all — neither wired nor wireless — regardless of cable, settings, or Siri status.

So the situation clearly varies between devices and connection types. I’m simply sharing real test results, not spreading misinformation.

These directions from Apple are unchanged from previous years --> Use CarPlay with your iPhone - Apple Support. Literally NOTHING has changed.

Note the following:

Set up CarPlay

Start your car, then make sure that Siri is on.
Connect your iPhone to your car:

- If your car supports CarPlay with a USB cable, plug your iPhone into the USB port in your car. The USB port might be labeled with a CarPlay icon or a smartphone icon. Be sure to use an Apple Lightning to USB cable.
- If your car supports CarPlay both wirelessly and with a USB cable, plug your iPhone into the USB port in your car. An alert on your iPhone will offer to connect you wirelessly on your next drives.
- If your car supports only wireless CarPlay, press and hold the voice command button on your steering wheel. Make sure that your stereo is in wireless or Bluetooth mode. Then on your iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure that Wi-Fi is also turned on. Tap the Info button for your CarPlay network, and check that Auto-Join is turned on. Then, go to Settings > General > CarPlay, and select your car. Check your car manual for more information.

No. You have not. You are mistaken. Siri is and always has been required for CarPlay.

I don't understand how anyone can claim they have successfully used CarPlay without Siri being active on their iPhone? CarPlay was an evolutionary step from Siri Free Eyes, which was the way we used to just connect our iPhones to our cars through Bluetooth to permit our iPhones to perform limited functions via our car infotainment systems, such as texting or making/receiving phone calls. Siri has been integral to CarPlay since it's inception.

People often remember things which weren't. I cannot recall ANY time where CarPlay was functional without Siri. Since Siri has always been required for CarPlay, iOS 26 didn't change that. Expecting Apple to return functionality which it didn't offer to begin with isn't likely going to happen.

I'm not arguing with you either. Just pointing out that Apple has maintained for the last few years that Siri is required for Apple CarPlay to work. I can't change that. You can't change that. So you either use Siri and have Apple CarPlay or you don't and you won't have Apple CarPlay.

Apple’s documentation is very general and not explicit. It can be interpreted in different ways, and it does not clearly state that Siri is a strict requirement for every device or every CarPlay setup.

And the claim that “Siri has always been required for CarPlay” is not correct.

I just tested this on my wife’s phone:

iPhone 13 Pro

– On iOS 18.7.1 and 18.7.2 → wired CarPlay worked with Siri fully disabled.

– After updating to iOS 26 → wired CarPlay still works with Siri disabled.

So the requirement clearly isn’t universal or consistent across different models or connection types.

Honestly, I would even swap phones with my wife, but USB-C is a must-have for me, so that’s not an option.

I’m not trying to argue — just sharing actual test results.

And please avoid CAPS and the passive-aggressive tone; it makes the discussion harder than it needs to be.

I understand your point, but I’ve just demonstrated on an older device that Siri is currently not required for CarPlay.

Wired CarPlay on the iPhone 13 Pro still works fully with Siri disabled, even after updating to iOS 26.

So it doesn’t seem like a historical requirement — it looks more like something Apple is gradually trying to enforce on newer models.

I’ll definitely send feedback to Apple, but I wanted to share the actual test results here as well.

This happened to me today, too. It's an enormous problem: I bought my car two years ago and almost every day since I have used CarPlay without Siri. It's important to me to be able to use Maps safely while listening to podcasts or music through iOS apps. I've followed your suggestion and sent feedback to Apple. I hope they fix this problem quickly.

As far as I can recall, CarPlay has always required Siri. It's never been possible to use if Siri is disabled.

If you claim “CarPlay has always required Siri”, then please provide actual Apple documentation that proves it. Not memories, not opinions – an official source.

My own experience is the opposite: Siri has been disabled on my devices for most of the time I’ve used CarPlay, and it will stay disabled in the future. I’d sooner stop using CarPlay than enable Siri again.

I still hope it’s possible to use CarPlay without Siri, because if core features start losing functionality after updates, who knows what next essential feature might be restricted.
