iPhone 17 Pro Max faulty cameras?

Testing the new iPhone 17 Pro Max camera honestly left me in shock. I don’t know what to think. Compared to my previous iPhone 15 Pro Max, the new main camera has much less detail when zoomed in, and the telephoto looks like a hot blurry, patchy mess. Do I have a faulty device, or what’s going on? All the pictures were taken with the Camera app, at the same time, 48 Mpx, HEIF, zoomed at the same spot, no filters. I also tried using the DSLR Camera app, but it crashes constantly and doesn’t seem to improve anything. I tried restarting the phone, erasing it and starting over again — nothing helped.
