How to check iPhone microphones for call quality

Hi everyone,

I’ve been told recently that my voice is very quiet or muffled when I make phone calls using my new (to me) iPhone 14 Pro (including on speakerphone and FaceTime). Before I consider repairs, I’d like to check whether my microphones are actually working properly.

Could someone please advise the best steps to test all of the iPhone’s microphones?

For example:-

  • Is there a way to test the top, bottom, and rear microphones individually?
  • Are there recommended apps or built-in diagnostics I should try?
  • Could this be caused by blocked microphone holes, a case, or a settings issue?

I would appreciate any suggestions before I take further action.

Thanks in advance!

There is to my knowledge no test a user can perform to test the microphones on an iPhone. Do you have a protective case on your phone? If yes, remove the case and make a call and see if the caller hears you better. If they do, I'd get a different case as a case can affect microphone quality. If no difference is apparent, then you'd need to schedule an appointment at your closest Apple Store Genius Bar to have your phone tested by Apple.

When you say new to you phone, can we assume you bought a used iPhone from someone? If yes, you may know why they wanted to sell it.
