Command Line Tools for Xcode update fails to install

Hi,

I am running Tahoe 26.1 [25878] on MacBook M4 Pro. I have an update called "command line tools for Xcode 26.1" that does not install upon pressing "Update Now" button.

It shows the agreement window, after which it gives an error that says: Installation failed. An error occurred while installing the selected updates.

How to remove or install the update so that it doesn't constantly pop up in the software update?

Try to Shift-boot to safe mode and install there.

Or download the installer and apply it:

The issue has resolved by itself when switched to less restrictive network.

Check if there is an existing installation of Command Line tools present. You can quickly test that by pressing shift+cmd+G in the Finder and entering the following path with a return:

/Library/Developer

If present, select the CommandLineTools folder and drag to the Trash. It will want your administrator's password to do that. Empty the Trash. Now, just for grins, completely shut your Mac down, and then restart it.

Back at System Settings > General > Software Update, try and install the Command Line Tools again. It will request your administrator password to proceed with the 4GB installation and should be version 26.1.

I’d try to install the command line tools manually from the command line:

xcode-select --install
