macOS system autofill does not support third-party password managers (1Password)
I use 1Password as my password manager and it works perfectly on my iPhone and iPad — but macOS still doesn’t seem to support it in the same way.
When I click Autofill → Passwords on my Mac, it only ever shows Apple Keychain.
1Password never appears, even though:
- 1Password is installed
- Universal Autofill is enabled
- The 1Password autofill shortcut (⌘\) works
- The browser extension is installed
- Autofill works correctly in all web browsers
- iOS/iPadOS allow 1Password to appear in the system autofill menu
From what I’ve learned, this appears to be a macOS limitation, not a configuration issue:
macOS does not currently allow any third-party password manager to appear in the system “Passwords” panel or the system autofill popup — only Keychain.
This makes the system “Passwords” option unusable for logging into apps like Spotify, Outlook, Discord, and others, because it always forces Keychain instead of the chosen password manager.
If Apple supports third-party password managers, why does macOS still block them from system-level autofill, while iOS and iPadOS allow it?
This behaviour leads many users to disable Apple’s autofill entirely just to avoid Keychain taking over.
It would be great if macOS could support third-party password managers at the system level in the same way iOS already does!!!
