Playing processor intensive games will heat up the interior parts of the phone, especially the display produces a large amount of heat, which will have to be dispersed over the housing of the iPhone.

If you have a case around your iPhone, remove it to make it easier to cool down.

The XR......introduced more than 7 years ago....uses an A12 processor. Pretty good at that time.

Demanding games really need a phone with an A12 processor (iPhone 15) or better.

Also, how does the Maximum Capacity for the battery look on your phone?

Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.

If the Maximum Capacity is 90%, your battery has already lost half of its capacity.

After using an iPhone normally for two years, the capacity (Battery Health) of your phone should at least be 80%.

At this point, Apple will replace your battery, if you want to do that. From this point forward, you will notice, that you might have to charge your battery more often.

You can get an estimate on this Apple page:

No, that is not correct. The OP told us that his battery was at 89%. Apple won't replace the battery unless it is at 80% or less.....even if you are willing to pay.

Apple will replace the battery at no charge if the Battery Health drops below 80% in the first year of operation. The OPs phone is 7+ years old.
