Siri Unable to Speak on car Bluetooth after iOS 26.1 update

Why does Siri not work when connected to Bluetooth in my car?

I just upgraded to iPhone 17 pro, and updated it to iOS 26.1, and when connected to my car Bluetooth, Siri is unable to speak.

When asking her to do simple things like add a song to my playlist, she does it, but she doesn’t say anything. When I ask her to read messages, the ring comes up, and either she will speak one or two words and be cut off, or no sound happens at all, and after a few seconds of silence it goes back to playing music. I never had this problem on my iPhone 13 mini (which I never updated to iOS 26.)

I’ve tried the usual fixes I saw on here like setting Siri to prefer spoken responses, turning off do not disturb while driving, etc., but nothing has changed.

Could your Siri volume be turned down?

In infotainment systems, the volume is often separated. So Media has one volume, System has another and Voice Assistant has a third volume. That's how it is in my car. I can adjust the volume in the menu in my car, but since I don't know what car you have, you can try activating Siri and while she is active, turn up the volume.

I have previously experienced not being able to hear Siri, even though the volume of my music was relatively high. There I found out that you could turn her volume up and down. I don't know if that will solve your problem - but it's worth a try.

You can try to troubleshoot, here is a suggestion of what I would do:

1. Remove the CarPlay connection from your iPhone, also delete the connection in your car infotainment system.

2. Disable Siri from your iPhone.

3. Restart your iPhone. Turn it off - and on again.

4. Turn off your car and remove the key.

Turn on your iPhone. Activate Siri again. Turn your car on, and pair your phone again. Try to see if that made a difference.

Arhh was convinced it was an aftermarket unit with CarPlay. But try it anyway - you can still remove your bluetooth connection between car and iPhone in both places, and the rest happens on the phone.

Good luck.

I thought it might be the same thing at first. When the Siri ring came up, I tried to increase the volume, but nothing happened. It’s strange because once in a while I will hear her say the first word or two, but then its like the audio disconnected completely.

For reference, this car is a 2014 Subaru Outback with the Harmon Kardon Sound system, so definitely an older system.
