Music app on MacBook Air switches audio

I have an external drive with music connected via USB-C to my 2022 MacBook Air. I’ve been using a DAC to play audio through my stereo system. Starting 2 Days ago, when I choose a song to play, the music app opens and switches the audio out from the DAC to the computer speakers. I’ve installed Tahoe 26.1- the latest update. Is there a way to deselect computer speakers in the MacBook air’s sound settings? Suggestions? Thanks!

Because you’re using:

macOS 26.1
an external drive
a USB DAC

Your best combination is:

Set your DAC as default in System Settings → Sound
Lock it in via Audio MIDI Setup
Prevent external drive sleep
Open Music first before playing tracks
(If needed) apply the Terminal fix

This stops the switching for nearly all users with your setup.
