How to update my phone to iOS 16

Use the Software Update function in Settings.

If you're using a first generation iPhone SE, it's not capable of 16 or above. Other models can only be updated to the versions displayed; Apple no longer signs older ones for them.

If your tag line is correct and you own an original iPhone SE, which is on iOS 15, iOS 15.8.5 is the end of the line for that model iPhone. You are likely finding out that some apps are no longer supported on such an old phone as the original SE. And that means, it's time to retire your phone and buy a new iPhone.

You need to keep in mind the original iPhone SE was released in 2016, 9 years ago. In cell phone years it is ancient at this point.

If that is a first-generation iPhone SE, you cannot update it to iOS 16 or higher. That phone originally shipped with iOS 9.3, and received six major iOS updates, but cannot update past iOS 15.*.

The second- and third-generation iPhone SEs can update to iOS 26, so it’s unlikely you have one of them. You would have needed to have prevented one of them from updating to iOS 16, 17, 18, and 26 for it to still be on iOS 15.
