Silent button doesn’t silence. Just records

The top button where I used to silence my phone doesn’t do that. It starts recording voice. I’ve gone into setting enabled the silence but it still doesn’t work. Help please

iPhone 16 Plus, iOS 18

On iPhones, the top button you’re talking about is usually the Action Button (on the iPhone 15 Pro/Plus and newer). Apple replaced the old mute switch with this customizable button, and by default on iOS 18, it might be set to Voice Memos instead of Silent Mode. That’s why pressing it starts recording instead of muting.

Here’s how to fix it:

  1. Open Settings → Action Button.
  2. You’ll see a list of actions you can assign to the button.
  3. Choose Ring/Silent (or Silent Mode—the exact wording depends on iOS version).
  4. Exit Settings. Now pressing the top button will toggle silent mode again.
