Mar 1, 2011 7:31 PM in response to Lam Lamby pmikle,I had the same issue, my "Other" was 14 GB of my 32 GB iPad!
I was able to remove other with the following sequence:
1. Remove all apps, music, movies, TV shows, etc. by unselecting the top check box in each area of the "Sync" area.
2. Synced iPad... still 14GB "Other"
3. Did a "Restore" in the Summary tab... "Other" gone, iPad was blank
4. Restored from backup... "Other" just a sliver
5. Added back all music, apps, etc. by reselecting, I didn't have to re-choose the detailed music, photo and movies selections, iTunes remembered... "other" still a sliver
Seems like it's fixed. I suspect that the iPad's temp space is being filled by some app, Mail or Netflix are my suspecions... and I'm sure I'll have to repeat above when my Other grows. Perhaps by then Apple fixes this with an update. -
Mar 13, 2011 9:26 AM in response to yuri530by 1human,Not sure if this has been solved, but I was having the same problem and got a hint from one of the posts below.
I deleted my corporate e-mail which I knew had all sorts of attachments associated with each e-mail.
"other" went from 20GB to 0.16 GB immediately. -
Mar 14, 2011 7:04 AM in response to 1humanby Milo3892,Restoring from backup seems to cure the problem every time for me. It slowly builds up over a few weeks, but I can create a backup and restore and "Other" usually drops back down to negligible levels again. I was told it could have something to do with failed downloads/installs including apps and podcasts. So far restoring from backup has kept it from getting too out of control, though.
Is there any problem with restoring from backup so often (circa once a month)? I definitely don't want to do any harm, but I also hate wasted space. I have never had my iPad full and would like to avoid it if at all possible. -

Apr 3, 2011 1:31 PM in response to Lam Lamby davidd31415,I believe that the idea behind the iPad was "keep it simple." This meant not giving you access to a file structure. In the end it would likely be confusing and annoying for you to have access to that. It's too much information for you and you wouldn't know what to do with it in the first place.
You're not supposed to ask "what is taking up so much space." You're supposed to realize that you didn't buy a big enough iPad, that Apple had offered you a bigger one when you made your purchase, that Apple had pointed out to you that the technology does not yet exist to make iPad memory upgradeable at the current price points, and YOU chose to stick with the low-end model. That is why you have problems. Trial by Apples. -

No, ususally, the excessive amount of other is simply a result of database corruption. It's easily fixed by restoring the iPad. It happens to iPods and iPhones as well. No grand conspiracy. -
Apr 20, 2011 3:41 AM in response to yuri530by T.Mas,My "other" data was increasing at a fast rate to about 18 GB. It happened when I tried to add picture folders to my iPad when there wasn't enough free space. iTunes would create "optimized" versions of the pictures then say, "no photos were copied because there was not enough free space". The optimized photos were then apparently saved to the iPad as "other" data as my "other" would increase by about a GB or 2 each time. Next time I synced with out freeing more space the same thing would happen again, taking up even more free space. I restored the iPad from backup which freed up the "other" data and brought my total back down to .4GB. I think Apple intended for these optimized photo files to be used upon the next attempt to add the photos but a glitch causes it to be inaccessible to iTunes which then reoptimizes the photos. Hope this helps.

Sep 28, 2011 4:04 PM in response to yuri530by Daniyal-1993,Alright, i understand your problem completely. I had the exact same problem; just the fact that my summary indicated a space of 5.2 gb primarily because i had been dumb enough not to delete my applications that had been saved in Installous itself.(I'm not referring to the ones that you've installed but the ones that are in in the application itself!). Assuming this is the case, delete them; your space should be fine.
Another thing that worked for several people is here,

Profound regards.

Oct 13, 2011 10:04 AM in response to davidd31415by woopadydoo,davidd31415, I think you're way off the mark man. I own a 64Gig and after updating to iOS 5, I'm now sitting at 20.3Gig of "other". I only had about 35 Gig woth of stuff on it before hand, and its only about a month old, so not enough time to build "other" files up.

Oct 13, 2011 7:05 PM in response to yuri530by sharky49,My "other" also just shot up to almost 7gb when it's never been over 1. I did a "Reset Network Settings" (Not reset All Settings) and "other" immediately dropped to 0.5gb. Hope that helps.

Oct 16, 2011 8:54 PM in response to yuri530by kamitsuyo,I recently had this problem on my ipad after updating to firmware 5.0. On mine i have 7.9gb in the other category. i found that it was mostly all video from an app that i didn't have installed anymore so i could not see it. On mine it was the app azul which allows you to play divx on your ipad. In the app you can add all your videos in. But with the app not installed you can not see the data. Maybe try to think back to any apps you may have uninstalled that could be holding your data.

Oct 18, 2011 7:00 AM in response to sharky49by Nate Walter,My 60 gig iPad 2 showed 53 gigs of 'other' after I upgraded to iOS 5.
I tried your solution, sharkey49, and it worked. Down to .75 gigs!

Oct 22, 2011 1:53 PM in response to yuri530by PDX Brian,I had this problem also when I first updated to OS5. I have a new 8GB 3GS. I shrunk other by unchecking all the tabs so nothing would sync. I resynced and other was down to 0.3 GB. I added back my items I wanted to sync. Other stayed at 0.3 GB when I resynced. We'll see if the problem keeps happening.
