Q: Help, iPad's "other" space taking so much space!!!!!

I am writing this message because
I got my 16Gb wifi ipad about a month ago and I'm using it with great content.
However, for some reason the space in my iPad is decreasing and decreasing,
because the orange, "Other" space is increasing and increasing.

I remeber earlier on it was at zero but I dont understand why it keeps getting bigger....
Its taking up 4.54 Gbs right now... way more than any of the other categories.... and I cant think of anything that would be in the "other category"

Can anyone help me understand the situation??
Is it normal???
Is there anything I can do to get rid of the huge amount of "other"s?
I'm running out of space a problem which I wouldnt have if that other category didnt take up so much!!!!!!

Thank you for Reading...

Yes, i have tried to restart numerous times. That works for some of the cache items and application oversubscribing but it never works when there are photos/videos hung up.

I can actually connect the ipad to the computer and it will show that i have no images in the device. If i then open iExplorer and navigate directly to the DCIM folder i will see images in the folder. Once i remove the images using iExplorer then i get all of my disk space back.

That is where all my "other" comes from as I record, then convert, tv shows to my iPad format, on my computer.  then transfer them over to my iPad to watch.  Watch them once and then delete them.  It doesn't make any difference whether I delete them with my iPad connected to iTunes or not...If I delete a 1.4 GB video file, my "other" grows by 1.4 GB.  If I delete a 700 MB video file, my "other" grows by 700 MB.  And so on and so on.

When the other gets bigger than the free space I need to transfer new tv shows, I just power down my iPad.  then power it back on.  The "other" automatically shrinks down back to about 1.2 GB, whereas before the power down it can easily be over 35 GB (I have a 64 GB iPad).

I "discovered" that if I delete all my cookies/history from Safari, then power off the ipad and let iTunes power it on for me (connect the powered off ipad to the laptop, the little apple symbol shows up on the ipad screen, etc etc), I can keep my "Other" at 1.05G for the time being. I HATE that it ate 126M in 4 days for no reason I can see. Of course, I haven't used it very much since it did that jump - I tend to treat it now like a live grenade and use it as little as possible - so I don't know if that memory grab was a one time thing or not. If I don't clear my cookies/history and power off/power on, it's around 1.07G.

IF I do a backup and "restore from backup" (when it gets to the point where I want to vomit when I see the "Other" number), won't it copy over when I have in the "Other" folder and restore that as well? I've read the suggestion to restore from backup  on this thread, but I assumed it won't clear "Other", just bring it back with my Angry Birds, Facebook, and other apps. (At least it did when I twice restored from backup after upgrading to iOS5.1 and the latest version on iOS6)

I must say, that while I intensely HATE that this happens to everyone here, there is comfort in knowing that I'm not alone with my burgeoning "Other" folder. And for that I am grateful.

In order to get rid of excessive other, you do NOT restore from a back up. You restore as NEW.

That's what I thought. The only reason I asked was a post from "Deep Sea" said:

"What i mean by "restore device and restore backup" ....

For devices running iOS 6 we run the "Restore iPad" command after that is complete we "Restore Backup". "

Which I take to mean backing up the ipad, wiping the ipad, restoring the ipad from the backup. I wanted to confim that "Other" would be brought back with a "restore from backup" before I spent the time doing it.

Restoring from a back up will just put the problem right back on the device. It will be a waste of time.

    A) The poster was fairly obviously being sarcastic, B) They posted that about two years ago and C) your post was a bit of pot calling the kettle black.

Well, my days of 1.05G are over, it's jumped to 1.14 in the past 2 weeks. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with my kids using it to play games more often these past few weeks. Where would game progression saves be stored? In the app data (under Usage)? Or in Other?

Having the same problem I just went to my Settings-General-Usage-Manage Storage-iPad.  I found what was taking up the space and turned it off.  Although I don't have any video or pics or photo stream it was my camera roll.  It reset itself and tt's all good now.

My "manage storage" is grayed out and I cannot choose it to get into it.  How do you get it "un-grayed"?

I had several Gig in OTHER and finally tracked it down to IMessage. My family keeps a ongoing converstation on IMessage and we had months of pictures and videos in there that accounted for the bulk of OTHER.

OK, so I think I found the "other" space culprate...at least in my circumstance. When I went to Settings-> General-> Usage it says Tapatalk is using 12.8 GB under Storage. My Other in iTunes says I'm using 2.7 GB and my free space at 1.1GB.

In Tapatalk Settings-> Advanced-> Clear Cache I did a reset. It actually took a long time and I did a couple of force quits becuase I thought it froze. But after a prolong period of time it looked like it finished clearing the cache.

After doing this my Other stayed at 2.7 GB but my free space went to 13.9GB. Again, this is only attributed to those of you who use Tapatalk.

    I hope this helps.

If you have jail broken your ipad most things to do with the jailbreak will be classed as "other".
