When I am keywording photos I will type a keyword and that keyword that will stay grey for a while.
When I advance to the next photo that same grey keyword that I just typed for the previous photo will persist.
I am unsure what how to interact with this greyed out keyword to either apply it or decide to not apply it to the next photo.

I'm not sure. Sometimes I add a keyword, and it stays "grayed out," I guess. It seems to take awhile to pop in, apparently because Photos is busy doing something else. Sometimes hitting Return makes it pop. I don't think I've ever seen it not get applied, though.
Do you use keyword shortcuts?
I just rely on autocomplete. I tried using keyword short cuts - but I have too many keywords and the ones I need shortcuts for vary a lot depending on what set of photos I am keyboarding.
Yeah, I try to have keywords that will work with the first two or three letters. I have about 25 in the QuickPick list-- about as many as will fit on a page. (Qlso about as many as there are letters for shortcuts!) In addition to adding keywords, they are very useful with the filter.
