Photos issue - can't move from photo to photo using the arrow

I used to be able to move from picture to picture using the arrow in the picture window of Photos. Now it doesn't work. Did something break in Photos? I am having this issue on my MacBook Pro, 16" 2019 running macOS 26.1.

I finally was able to boot up in Safe Mode. When I attempted to open Photos while in Safe Mode, the app would not open, and I got an error message each time. It said a report was being sent to Apple. It appears that there is an issue with the application, and I don't know how to resolve it. Any suggestions?

It probably is the library that's damaged. While in Safe Mode (and normal mode) try to create a new library, import a couple photos and see if you can edit them, etc.

How to use safe mode on your Mac:

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

When I click on a photo to see it individually, I cannot go forward or backward to the next photo. The little arrow that appears when I move to the left or right edge of the photo does not function. I have tried restarting Photos, and my computer. Neither fixed the issue. In this photo, the arrow on the right side of the screen doesn't do anything. I have used Photos and Apple's previous photo app for many years, and it always worked for me. Now it doesn't and I don't know why.

Newer, M1,2,3, or 4, Apple Silicon Macs, go into Safe mode somewhat differently that Intel Macs, so be sure to use the appropriate method.

When I am looking at photos in "all items" and I select an individual photo to see it in a larger view, that's when I get the arrow which allows me to move back or forth to the next photo in the library.

I'm so sorry-- I'm very confused. The only place I think that I see "All Items" is in the Filter,

which looks different than in macOS15. Even with that, I never see an arrow > for moving through pictures.

Are we talking about the Photos app on a Mac?

Works for me. Is there anything more specific you can say? I'm in Preview mode, so full screen, in Library or in an Album. It also works with thumbnail view.

Try

  • Exiting and re-starting Photos.
  • Restart the computer (of course)
  • Re-start in Safe Mode. This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes, and it often helps. Safe Mode is different for different computers, so see this:
