Can I connect an external display with HDMI and Port Display to M4 MacBook Air without DisplayLink?

I recently purchased the M4 MacBook Air and am running Tahoe 26.1. I would like to connect to an external display that has only HDMI and Port Display connections.

Do I need to download DisplayLink in order to use this external display?

Thank you!

I assume that you meant HDMI and DisplayPort, not HDMI and “Port Display.”

No, there is no need to install the DisplayLink driver. That is for a workaround whose name (DisplayLink) sounds similar to DisplayPort, but which is not the same as DisplayPort.

Your Mac outputs DisplayPort video over uSB-C and Thunderbolt, and can drive up to two external monitors in a first-class, hardware-accelerated way. (One each off different USB-C ports, or two off a Thunderbolt dock.). No drivers needed.

You just need a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter cable, USB-C to HDMI adapter cable, or hub/dock that has a dedicated DisplayPort or HDMI port driven off hardware video output. The adapter cables are a dime a dozen on Amazon and similar places. So are inexpensive (non-Thunderbolt( hubs that can drive a single HDMI monitor.

Hello, thank you so much for the quick reply and correction. I did mean DisplayPort. Based on your reply I will purchase a USB-C to HDMI adapter cable to go along with my HDMI cable. I prefer to connect directly from the back of the monitor to my MBA, without a hub/dock.

If you think there is anything else I have missed or want to add please do.

I appreciate it!
